On Wednesday I went to Sing It Forward with my siblings and cousin, where some great Vancouver talent came together to support the St. James Music Academy. SJMA provides opportunities for young people living in the Downtown East Side and believes in achieving “social transformation through the power and love of music.” Pretty cool. Aidan Knight, Vince Vaccaro, Said The Whale, Hey Ocean!, The Zolas, Robocode, The Belle Game, Michael Bernard Fitzgerald, plus more great young artists performed at the Vogue to support the cause (Shad and Hannah Georgas also made appearances). I was really impressed with the genuine compassion from the artists-this was not publicity stunt for anyone. The cause never seemed paternalistic or sensationalized, an issue I notice with many campaigns related to the DTES. All performers donated their time, the Vogue donated the space, so all proceeds went to the kids. Well done Vancouver. This is an ultra adorable video of Zachary Gray from the Zolas singing with the students. More videos are available through Vancouver is Awesome, and they’re all fantastic.
