feminist wonderings, literary wanderings and other moments that capture my attention.

I rang in the New Year with many of my favourite people, got to kiss a total babe and smashed my phone into one hundred pieces that were immediately crushed under the high heels of club goers (two out of three isn’t bad). I love making new year’s resolutions though I’m awful at keeping them. here is my list of hopelessly optimistic goals for 2012.

be more kind. 2011 wasn’t my best year for playing nicely with others. the witty bitch bit can be fun but kinda leaves you bitter. I want to think more carefully about what I say to or about others. be more patient. remember that anger and resentment hurt me more than they damage their target. on the proactive side, I’ll tell my friends all the things I love about them more. my sis wrote one personalized compliment to every person at our new year’s party and handed them out as positive ways to start 2012. such a great starting point.

grow my eyebrows out. expressing interest and curiosity through facial expression during a conversation is an important part of active listening, but this season I’m vowing to downplay the surprised-chic style.

write+read more. blah, blah, blah. actually submit my work. ignore the voice of my first-year writing prof and try to write fiction. keep active in my book club. subscribe to some literary magazines.

go to more yoga. when I have something in my life that makes me as happy as yoga, there is no excuse not to practice regularly. I want to do a 30-day challenge sometime this year.

keep in touch. ironic seeing as I’m spending the first week of 2012 without a phone. there are so many people I care about that I don’t see enough, even in my own city. I’ll be less of a social recluse and make dinners with my friends more.

take more risks. left my phone number for a cutie out at breakfast on new year’s day (and it’s heart break proof, seeing as I won’t even have that number anymore). that’s just the baby steps. I’ll try more headstands, apply for the schools I want, ask people out, share more embarrassing stories on my blog and follow improv’s first rule of always (read: usually) saying yes. wish me luck and modesty.

honorable mentions go to training for the Sun Run, moving to Main Street, cooking more, going to bed earlier and eating fewer bagels. my life could be so perfect if I tried harder.

oh! and apply for nursing school. that’s kind of a huge one.
